Targeted towards advanced freeskiers who find themselves off trail in exposed environments the Receptor Backcountry is a high developed helmet based on the pr oven Receptor Construction. The Receptor Backcountry utilizes a variation on Double Shell construction with a PC/ABS outer shell for durability on impact and a light weight PC inner shell. Inside the shell a multi impact PEP liner allows the Receptor Backcountry to live a long life protecting your head from smaller impacts. Between the two an Aramid Membrane provides a puncture proof barrier so if you were to catch a rock it won't get through to your head. While this is all just a slightly modified Receptor where the Receptor Backcountry takes huge step up in safety is through the MIPS Protection system. Mimicking one of the safety systems that already exist in the human head, the helmet will absorb not only the vertical part of impacts, but also the rotational violence which is a serious concern in the case of an oblique impact. So under an oblique impact the shell and liner are able to counter-rotate in relation to each other greatly reducing the stress on the brain for a safer helmet than every before. While no one wants to fall the truth is we do, so if you are going to try to be the best you should protect your head with the best.

Comments about POC Receptor Backcountry Helmet 2012:
I bought this (after hours of carefully reviewing different brands and styles of helmets for their safety features) for my 12 year old competitive freeskier. POC has really done well with this helmet, combining the safety features of their reace helmets into a "cool" looking helmet suitable for the heavy and repeated beatings a competitive freeskier can give it. I'm so happy with this purchase! +++++ Just for future reference to anyone who hasn't bought a POC helmet, their sizing runs a bit small. So, for example, my son wore a small in the Shred brand but a medium in POC.

Comments about POC Receptor Backcountry Helmet 2012:
Really nice helmet, comfortable, not itchy, feels like it has excellent protection (though I haven't put that to the test). The sizes might be a little smaller than what you'd expect from a helmet--I'm a medium in my motorcycle helmet and figured I'd be the same in this. Turns out I'm a large; medium was too small so sent it back for the next size up. The sizes are true to the tape though, so take the time to measure your head before ordering.
